US Senate celebrates 50 years of Cape Verdean independence and highlights contributions of the Cape Verdean diaspora
The United States Senate passed a resolution honoring the 50th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cape Verde, also recognizing the contributions of the Cape Verdean community in the US to democracy and the historical ties between the two countries.

The Senate of the United States passed S. Res. 373, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cape Verde.anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cape Verde, marked on July 5, 2025, and celebrating the significant contributions of the Cape Verdean diaspora in promoting democracy both in Cape Verde and in the United States.
The resolution, presented by Senators Edward Markey, Peter Welch, Elizabeth Warren and Jack Reed, highlights Cape Verde's rich history, from the arrival of the Portuguese in 1456 to the struggle for independence in 1975, led by Amílcar Cabral, and the role of the Cape Verdean community in preserving the culture and building ties between the two countries.
The Senate also recognizes that Cape Verde has played an important role in African and transatlantic affairs since independence, and praises the continued cooperation with the United States in areas such as regional security, economic development and democracy promotion.
The resolution also praises the Cape Verdean community in the US, highlighting their involvement in politics, education, the arts and sports, as well as their historic role in the civil rights movement and support for Cape Verdean independence.
In addition, the Senate recognizes Cape Verde's solidarity with Ukraine, condemning the Russian invasion and supporting the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In official statements, the senators stressed that this resolution strengthens the historical, cultural and diplomatic ties between Cape Verde and the United States, celebrating half a century of independence and democratic progress in the archipelago.
